Smoky Mountain Academy was the name of a mission high school which was established for the mountain families in the early 1900’s. Both of Sarah’s parents graduated from this school. See their outstanding ornate diplomas hanging on the wall.

It may have been as early as 1912 that the Baptist people of upper Sevier County, Tennessee, began to talk about a mountain school. The boys and girls not only needed more education in fundamentals, but they needed religious training. This need was a sufficient cost for vision: and some praying God fearing, God-loving Baptists of Sevier County joyfully and prayerfully entertained this vision. The school was first named Sevier County Baptist High School and was later changed to Smoky Mountain Academy.
